HOW WE RESPOND TO FEAR

When I am afraid, I …

PSALM 56:3

It’s been twenty years since the last letter from the stalker, and I still have not discovered the person’s identity. After so long, one might expect me to be “over it” by now—that fear should no longer influence my life. I wish that was the case. Like many others who have suffered trauma, I must work to keep fear under control. Fear has loosened its grip around my throat, but it remains hidden in the shadows, waiting for an opportune time to make itself known. Fear shows up in quiet ways now, and, at times, I don’t even realize my responses to life are fear-based.

Perhaps you struggle with the same issues.

I need to speak with someone about an important issue but choose to remain silent—in fear of a verbal attack. I allow a new opportunity to slip through my fingers, refusing even to give it a chance—in fear of failure. I own enough art supplies to equip a professional studio, yet I fail to place the canvas on the easel—in fear of making a mistake. I refuse to put on a swimming suit and feel the summer sun and water on my skin—in fear of ridicule. And as I write this book, I stare at the blank computer screen, day after day, month after month, with words caught in my throat—in fear that my story is not worth telling.

The enemy’s use of fear is pervasive, cunning, and cruel. Even after the threat of perceived danger has passed, he uses our residual fear to steal the abundant life we have in Jesus.

But if we understand the ways of the enemy, our typical responses to fear, and the power of God’s Word, we can face our fears in full assurance of our Savior’s love and protection.

Below is a list of the common responses to fear, no matter how large or small the perceived threat. Our “immediate physical response” is usually an involuntary reaction and is neither good nor bad. While the behaviors associated with the “spirit of fear” are normal for those who have undergone trauma, they can become detrimental and debilitating long-term if not dealt with. And when dealing with fear, responding with Scripture is always a powerful choice as the Holy Spirit intercedes with protection, wisdom, and discernment in our time of need.
